Fifth Annual Brag Bucks Auction
Community Homework & After-School Program

CORNWALL, ONTARIO -Tri-County Literacy Council’s Community Homework & After-School Program (CHAP) will host its 5th Annual Brag Bucks Auction on Thursday, May 28 at the Agape Centre, 40 5th St. West. Bidding begins at 5:30 p.m. as local auctioneer, Theresa Taylor, once again gives generously of her time and talent.

Tri-County Literacy Council, a non-profit organization helping adults and children improve their literacy skills, has successfully operated CHAP centres in SD&G; for the past seven years. To date, there are five locations with plans for a sixth under way. The centres provide both structured and flexible learning environments where students receive help and guidance from facilitators and volunteer tutors. Along with enrichment activities such as the Brag Bucks Auction, students also participate in various literacy and recreational games. The community service is free to families who register their children. Program sites are located at: Eamers Corners Public School; Rothwell Osnabruk Public School, Ingleside; Char-Lan Recreation Centre, Williamstown; Agape Centre; and Winchester Community Centre.

During the year, CHAP students from Junior K to grade eight, participate in an incentive program that encourages them to earn “Brag Bucks” (play money) for successfully completing assigned academic tasks. And while they may also lose money for contravening rules, there is always the opportunity to earn extra Brag Bucks for outstanding work or behaviour. In the process, they learn about money and how to keep track of deposits and withdrawals in a real bankbook.

At year’s end, students get to spend their ‘hard -earned’ money at the Brag Bucks Auction! Under the guidance of staff, volunteers and parents they bid on a variety of prize items generously donated by local individuals, businesses and corporations.
