Sixth Annual Brag Buck Auction
Seaway News, Thursday, May 20, 2010 pg. 69
Local, award-winning auctioneer, Theresa Taylor will lead the bidding one more time as Tri-County Literacy Council prepares to host its sixth annual Brag Bucks Auction on May 26 at the Cornwall Public Library.
Bidding gets underway at 5:30p.m. with viewing of auction items up to half an hour beforehand.
Throughout the year students from area Community Homework & After-School Programs (CHAP) participate in an incentive program that encourages earning 'Brag Bucks' (play money) for regular attendance, finishing school-work, respecting house rules and last but not least, demonstrating strong team spirit.
For the past few weeks, these same students have been busy adding up their annual 'earnings' - money they will use at auction to bid on such items as sports equipment, board games, books, gift certificates and a whole lot more.
The auction items are generous donations from community businesses, agencies and individuals. Organizing such an event allows Tri-County Literacy Council and community participants a chance to give CHAP students a high five for their hard work.
Tri-County Literacy Council is a non-profit agency helping adults and children improve their literacy skills. They've been around for almost 25 years. For the last eight years they've operated CHAP centers in SD&G. The centers provide positive learning environments where students from Junior K to grade nine receive academic help along with opportunities for recreational activities, art projects and special events.
With a focus on parent involvement, CHAP also partners and collaborates with schools, community organizations and individuals to provide students with diverse and meaningful learning experiences.
